Background of the Study:
Remittances, the funds transferred by migrants to their home communities, play a critical role in enhancing household welfare in regions facing economic challenges. In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, remittances have become a vital source of income for many families, bridging gaps caused by limited local economic opportunities. These financial inflows help improve living standards by enabling investments in education, healthcare, and small businesses, thereby contributing to economic stability (Obi, 2023). Remittances often serve as a cushion against economic shocks and can foster entrepreneurial activities by providing seed capital for small-scale ventures (Chukwuemeka, 2024). However, while remittances offer numerous benefits, they may also lead to dependency and create disparities in household welfare if not managed properly. This study examines the multifaceted effects of remittances on household welfare, exploring both the positive contributions and potential negative consequences. By analyzing household income patterns, expenditure behaviors, and investment decisions, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how remittances shape economic and social outcomes in Uhunmwonde (Nwachukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the recognized benefits of remittances, households in Uhunmwonde face challenges in effectively utilizing these funds. Mismanagement of remittance income and low levels of financial literacy often result in inconsistent improvements in living standards (Onyema, 2023). In some cases, heavy reliance on remittances has led to a dependency syndrome that hinders the development of local income-generating activities, thus perpetuating socio-economic disparities. The uneven distribution of remittance inflows may also create tension within communities, where benefits are not uniformly experienced. This study seeks to investigate these issues by examining the effects of remittances on household welfare, identifying factors that both enhance and limit their positive impact.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of remittances on household welfare in Uhunmwonde.

  • To identify challenges associated with remittance utilization in the area.

  • To recommend strategies for optimizing remittance benefits for sustainable household development.

Research Questions:

  • How do remittances affect household welfare in Uhunmwonde?

  • What challenges hinder the effective utilization of remittance funds?

  • What measures can be implemented to enhance the positive impact of remittances on household welfare?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Remittances significantly improve household welfare in Uhunmwonde.

  • Lack of financial literacy diminishes the positive effects of remittances.

  • Structured financial frameworks can enhance the effective utilization of remittance funds.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of remittances in improving household welfare in Uhunmwonde. Its findings will assist policymakers and financial institutions in designing interventions that maximize remittance benefits, thereby fostering sustainable economic growth and improved living standards (Okoro, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the effects of remittances on household welfare in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, focusing on local income patterns and expenditure behaviors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Remittances: Funds transferred by migrants to their home communities (Uche, 2023).

  • Household Welfare: The overall well-being and standard of living of a household (Eze, 2024).

  • Financial Literacy: The ability to understand and effectively manage financial resources (Nwankwo, 2023).
